Burial- Cemetery services

Burial remains a traditional option for funerals and is increasingly popular as a 'green' alternative. Burial services can be arranged through a funeral
director, although several other options are available.

We currently provide burial facilities at seven cemeteries:

• Thornhill Cemetery
• Cathays Cemetery, Allensbank & Fairoak Roads
• Western Cemetery, Ely
• Pantmawr Cemetery, St John's Churchyard, Danescourt
• St Isan's Churchyard, Llanishen Cemetery
• Llandaff Cemetery 
• St John's, Radyr Cemetery
• St Margaret's, Roath Cemetery   

No new graves are available in Cathays, Llanishen, St John's Churchyard, Danescourt or Llandaff Cemeteries but burials do take place in those plots where the exclusive rights of burial still exist and for the interment of cremated remains in existing family graves. All other cemeteries have land available for burial. At Thornhill and Western cemeteries, there are burial sections with small graves set aside for the interment of stillborn or small babies. We also provide a woodland glade burial site for 'green' funerals at Thornhill.

There is provision for the burial of cremated remains at other cemeteries including Cathays and a Columbaria unit at Llanishen. There are also Chinese, Muslim, Jewish and Greek Orthodox burial sections available.

There are two chapels for funeral services at Thornhill. The Wenallt Chapel seats approximately 160 mourners and is equipped with an electronic organ, CD and cassette tape player. The Briwnant Chapel seats approximately 50 mourners, music is via CD and cassette player.

Both chapels are equipped with an induction loop system. The chapels are both on a single level allowing access for wheelchairs and, if required, a wheelchair is available. A member of staff will be available to offer any assistance required. It is your right to outline the type of music and ceremony that you would like. Any aspect of the service may be discussed in advance with members of staff at the Thornhill Office who will be happy to assist you.

A wide variety of memorial types are available in different cemeteries. The majority of new sections opened are lawn garden allowing for a headstone.

Cemetery offices are located at Western and Cathays Cemetery (Fairoak Road) and funeral co-ordinators are present at these locations to help with
any queries.
